Community Strengthening Worker

We have an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified Community Strengthening Worker

with extensive experience to join our team! 


The position is fixed term ending 30th June 2023

22.4 hours per week


Primarily located in Oakleigh with an expectation to travel to other sites/locations to fulfill operational requirements


$34.04 - $42.25 p/hour (depending on qualifications/experience)

+ 10.5% Superannuation + Not for profit packaging

About the role ... 

We are looking for a suitably qualified Community Strengthening with extensive experience to join our team.  The Community Strengthening worker will engage and empower migrant, refugee and other newcomer community members to improve social participation, economic well-being, independence, community connectedness, and overall health and wellbeing.  


The role is responsible for the provision and monitoring of high quality community development programs, casework and case management involving migrants and refugees; with a particular focus on women, families and youth.



To be considered for the position you must have:



  • Appropriate Tertiary qualifications in Social Work or other relevant human/social sciences, community development.
  • Current Victorian Driver’s licence and access to a private vehicle are essential



  • An understanding and commitment of the needs of newly-arrived migrant and refugee communities, International students and asylum seekers.
  • Strong familiarity of systemic and structural barriers that those new to Australia may face, and possible approaches for overcoming these, in particular with regards to the areas of health and wellbeing, economic, social and civic participation.
  • Sound understanding of current commonwealth and state policies related to immigration, settlement, asylum seekers, income support and other relevant social policies with demonstrated ability to respond flexibly to changing policy and program needs.
  • Experience in identifying and responding to emerging needs of individuals and community in both groupwork and casework contexts and in partnerships with other agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in casework/case management; conducting needs assessments, developing and reviewing case plans, providing information, referral and advice.
  • Excellent relationship management and communication skills including the ability to develop and   maintain collaborative partnerships with individuals, communities, and key stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting people from migrant and refugee backgrounds through learning and social engagement opportunities.
  • High level project management, report writing and presentation skills including budget management
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking and negotiation skills
  • Sound computer literacy and proficiency in the use of Microsoft office
  • Lived experience of migration, resettlement and the capacity to speak a relevant community language advantageous but not essential

A police check with no disclosable outcome is required by MiCare for this position.


In accordance with Victorian Public Health order medicare evidence of full COVID-19 vaccination, including dose 3 is a requirement of the position.


Current flu vaccination is highly encouraged but not essential in this role.
